History

From state mediators
to State Conciliation and Mediation Officer

Established in 1980, the history of the Office of State Conciliation and Mediation Officer spans more than 40 years. Before that time or from the year 1926 there were a number of state mediators. The first appointed was Björn Þórðarson who held the position until 1942, then Jónatan Hallvarðsson who held the position until 1945 and finally Torfi Hjartarson who took over the position in 1945 and served until the establishment of the office of the State Conciliation and Mediation Officer (SCMO) 1980.
