History

From state mediators
to the State Conciliation and Mediation Officer

Established in 1980, the history of the Office of the State Conciliation and Mediation Officer spans more than 40 years. Before that time, beginning in 1926, a succession of state mediators fulfilled this function. The first appointed was Björn Þórðarson who held the position until 1942. He was followed by Jónatan Hallvarðsson, in office until 1945, and finally Torfi Hjartarson who took over that year and served until the establishment of the Office of the State Conciliation and Mediation Officer (SCMO) in 1980.
